Everyone working out needs to stay hydrated. Try a fruit smoothie fundraiser at the gym. Those working out will appreciate it, your organization will benefit form the proceeds, and the gym may even end up with a few new members!

Find a gym that doesn’t have a smoothie bar, and ask if they’ll let you set one up for a day. Ask if there is an area with electrical outlets, and which is also accessible from a heavily trafficked area within the gym. If it’s visible from outside, too, it’s perfect. Make sure it is OK to pin up posters and have people with signs outside advertising ‘smoothie day’.

If you can find several dorm size refrigerators to use, keeping supplies cold will be much easier. A small size freezer for ice, and frozen fruits and veggies, will make it even more convenient. If these aren’t available, coolers with ice will work. Be sure to keep several coolers for ‘clean’ ice to use in making the smoothies. You’ll need some heavy duty blenders too, and an accessible sink to wash them in.

Find a health food store, or grocery store with an organic section, and ask if they’ll donate fruits and vegetables in exchange for free advertising. At the grocery store, ask if they’ll also donate (if you have the refrigerators) yogurt and regular milk, as well as soymilk or rice milk for those who don’t do dairy. Even canned coconut milk will work when flavored with a little vanilla or ice cream syrup.

If you don’t have the fridges you can use powdered milk as a substitute – you can even get dried yogurt and other shelf safe products. Don’t forget the wheat grass and energy drinks for the diehard health nuts! Don’t forget paper cups for serving the smoothies, and napkins – preferably from recycled paper products. Provide plain and flavored water, as well as icy green tea to round out the selection for those who are less adventurous.

Make and distribute posters and flyers several weeks in advance letting people know about the smoothie bar, which gym, and when. Prepare those for the smoothie tables with the advertising promised in exchange for supplies. Also, display the name of your organization and the exact use of the proceeds. A great idea is to offer a free small smoothie to anyone who signs up for a gym membership – you might even be able to get the gym to donate a portion of the sign up fees!

Arrange to prepare your area the evening before, so on the morning of the event you have less to do before starting. Set up your tables to serve different types of smoothies in different areas. Have several blenders for each flavor. Don’t forget to offer small sweat towels and sweatbands for sale – a local sports store might be willing to donate monogrammed ones for the free advertising, and you can make an extra profit.
