Who doesn’t like to play dress-up? If you need a fundraising activity for grade-schoolers, and want the added edge of a chance to help our planet, try hosting a Go Green Fashion fundraiser! In the world of abundance we live in, what we wear on our back or feet is often still full of use long after we tire of it. Repurposing old clothing is a great way to make a difference!

Get the community involved. Send out invitations (on recycled paper, of course!) inviting those in the community to donate clothing, shoes or purses for a going green fashion show. Suggest they change the look of their pieces up a bit, by embellishing or dressing up old items. Have them or their children model their refurbished pieces at the show.

You could ask local department stores if they’d like to contribute discontinued items or items that may have a bit of flaw in them for your fashion show. This encourages awareness for recycling items as opposed to being wasteful. If all clothing were utilized until worn out, there would be a greatly reduced need for manufacture of new items, and a decrease in pollution. Volunteers can replace missing buttons, add an appliqué to cover a blemish, or fix a hem to make a garment sale ready!

Not only is this a good way to get the most out of apparel, but it teaches everyone to think about ways to reuse what they own by repurposing it. After all fashion has a huge impact on this world we live on. Going green through clothing saves our world from abuse of materials that could eventually be harmful to our environment. These items such as clothing, purses and shoes are then kept out of landfills, thus lessening the abuse our planet must otherwise endure when we so carelessly toss things away.

Create ‘go green’ prizes for the best repurposed outfit (this could be a gift basket with environmentally friendly laundry products!) Encourage the audience to bid on outfits they’d like to have, and have racks of excess clothing available for browsing. You can even charge an admission, and have a coupon in the program for a certain percentage off of their total purchase to encourage some extra shopping! Proceeds from the show can go to whatever it was you were raising funds for. If you were raising funds for an organization that promotes going green, then try to get them involved by giving an informative talk about the cause as an introduction to the fashion show.

Fund raising through a Go Green Fashion Show will be fun and educational. You’ll be doing your part to support an activity that could help in saving our world from waste and neglect, and having a lot of fun in the process!
