What child doesn’t want to go fishing, especially if Mom or Dad is an avid angler, or watches fishing programs on television? Why not hold a catch release fundraiser where kids can catch a fish!
Contact a fish hatchery and ask if they’ll donate sunfish or catfish. Be sure to tell the hatchery, (as well as everyone who donates) who will benefit from the fundraiser and the intended use of the proceeds. Offer them advertising in exchange for their generosity. You might even be able to get someone to sponsor the event, if they plan to stock a tank they can ‘loan’ you the fish for a weekend!

If there is a farm store in your area, ask if you can use part of their parking lot and several large stock tanks. Point out this will bring people to their store on the day of the fundraiser, as well as provide advertising before the event.
In the absence of a farm store, find a park with water faucet access, and plan to set up there. Contact a store with large plastic pools, and ask if they’ll donate several for your fundraiser. Be sure they are not the soft inflatable kind – kids will be using fishhooks in them!
Find a tackle shop to donate fishing poles, hooks with no barb, fishing line, and bait. Use braided line because it’ll be easier to tie, especially for volunteers unfamiliar with mono- filament fishing line. If the tackle shop has a large parking lot, they may be willing to donate use of it for the fundraiser.
Tie the line to the outer end of each pole. (You don’t need reels.) When it’s time to fish, have the kids drop the baited hooks into the water. When a fish bites, they simply lift the pole and pull the fish from the water. If you want a contest for the biggest or smallest fish, weigh-in as the fish are caught, then return them to the water.
Make posters several weeks before the fundraiser and place them in family friendly locations where parents of hopeful fisher-kids will see them. Pictures of children fishing, or fish jumping from water will be attention grabbers to draw people to the posters. Be sure to list those helping make your fundraiser a success by donating.
Set up a table for renting poles and selling bait. Provide photographers to take pictures of children with their catch. Have chilled water and soft drinks available for sale from ice-filled coolers. Display a list of all who have been kind enough to donate supplies and help make this fishing fundraiser a success. Expect a lot of requests for this to be a yearly event!!
