May I get you some coffee sir, take out the trash, make copies, clean the lunchroom? Does this event sound like a fun one you’d like to host as a fundraiser? This fundraiser is an “Assistant For A Day Fundraiser”. It’s a good way to help students be interactive in a work related situation, but also it’s main purpose is to raise funds for school activities.
As host/hostess of this event you’d be responsible for getting the news out about this fundraiser. Posting fliers in business areas or actually taking the time to visit owners of a business and trying to get them involved is a good way to start.
You’d need to sit down with the owner and decide what tasks the student would be able to do. You could suggest the owners make a donation towards the school as payment for services received. Of course the students shouldn’t be burdened down where they couldn’t each fulfill their part of the agreement, they want to do the best they can.
Some ideas businesses could have students do for the day are:
- Empty trash
- Clean lunchrooms
- Wipe down counters
- Clean Windows
- Make copies of things needed copies
- Answer phones
- Clean offices
- Sweep the floors
- Vacuum the floors
- Clean restrooms
- Be door greeters
- Carry out groceries
- Tidy up desk areas
- Run errands around the office and so forth
These activities would need to be monitored by a teacher or PTA member. This would be for ever location a student is working at. This way the student is having a watchful eye kept upon them and they’re being watched out for themselves.
A good day to set aside for this is a Friday or a Monday. It could coincide with a bring your kids to work day. No actual payment would be made to a student, but rather a donation for a job well done can be issued to the school. This way the monies will go towards what activities is needing the assistance at the time.
As a thank you to the student, a certificate of achievement could be handed out, as well as a coupon for a free drink or ice cream. If the host/hostess wanted to, they could see about getting a sponsor for the event like Pizza Hut or some convenience store and see if they donate food/drinks also as a thank you for the students.
This fundraiser while fun helps the students to see what goes on in businesses, as well as the community, by being involved in it. They get their feet wet regarding what it’s like working in the business world. Be sure to talk this fundraiser up. When you send out fliers to businesses be sure to include everyone. Sometimes word of mouth is the best advertisers. This fundraiser is educational and rewarding to students and those who own businesses.
