It’s getting close to that time of the year again. A time when kitchens will be filling up with yummy foods and desserts for the holiday season. Old recipes will come out revealing secrets which have been passed down from generation to generation.
Now is the opportunity to take advantage of those open cookbooks and host a delicious fundraiser sure to be a huge success. Since everyone’s sweet tooth seems to get sweeter about now, look up those old recipes for granny’s home-made peanut brittle.
Be creative with the brittle and start your own traditions as you prepare to sell this crunchy treat. Have at least three different choices they can choose from. Some nut choices that would work well for brittle are: walnuts, pecans and of course peanuts.
Something to consider before you even make this candy, is to start advertising the fundraiser. Approach businesses, churches, hospitals and neighborhoods with your list of brittle candy choices. Give them the option of a variety box if they can’t choose which one they want. Flexibility is always a smart move when trying to raise money.
Get as many payments as you can up-front. For those who want to pay on delivery, be sure to let your customers know you’ll bringing the brittle on a pre-selected delivery date. Don’t hesitate to ask anywhere from $8.00 to $15.00 a box, depending on what size they want. Offer large and small boxes of this candy.
Now to package these treats! Hit the local dollar stores or hobby shops and find a selection of white boxes in different shapes. Get a couple dozen extra boxes – don’t forget you might be able to convince some of your customers to double their order on delivery day! Think about having a small box you can sell as a ‘buy one get one free’. You can decorate these with colorful bows or ribbons to make them look appealing. Next holiday season this fundraiser can be hosted again, so impress your customers the first time.
Be sure the boxes will be able to accommodate nice size portions to suit a small or large selection. Pick up some labels which you can write the names of the customers on with their selection of brittle choice. Include a thank you note with each box sold. These little touches mean a lot.
When packaging time comes line the boxes with wax paper so the candy doesn’t stick to the box. You can even place a layer of wax paper over the top once you are finished to keep the candy from sticking to the lid. A word of advice: be sure your brittle is completely cooled before you start boxing it!
Always deliver when you say you will. Arrange to have as much help as you can once the delivery stage happens. Since this is a fundraiser event they’ll be plenty of help, so divide it out equally so things will run smoothly and efficiently. Alternately, you can have a predetermined pick up point – perhaps the school gym after assembly, as many parents will be in attendance.
Keep a list of customers on hand for the next fundraiser event. Most will be happy to fill out a line on your pad when ordering stating their phone number and even email – this can be used the next year to pre-sell as people are generally happy to contribute again. Remember the key to any group fundraising event is organization, so be prepared.
