Fathers’ Day is sometimes overshadowed by its companion, Mothers’ Day. Moms are easy – flowers, candy and perfume will usually do the trick – but what should you get for dear old Dad? That is the question your fund raising group can this year. You can hold a terrific fundraiser and give the dads in the community a present they won’t ever forget!
Hosting a outdoor fair just for dads can give them the chance to show off their skills and have the focus on them for a change. Plan on holding your fair on the Saturday before Fathers’ Day, and get things set up well in advance. If all the children keep reminding Daddy about his special day, he’ll have to make sure to schedule it in!
You can often count on local schools to have plenty of set up stuff for a regular fair – and with a little work, you can put a nice manly twist on all the activities. Have one booth to ‘dunk the boss’ and another to ‘throw pies at the mother in law’. Don’t forget to have a spot for testing their strength and one to let them practice their accuracy of aim.
Watermelon seed spitting contests, horseshoe tournaments, and rubber band gun target shooting are only a few ideas that guys will love. Serve non-alcoholic beer, pretzels, and peanuts, and consider a karaoke machine. You can even have a raffle for a nice guy prize – something donated from a local electronics store with a shiny remote, or a gift card to the home improvement store.
Get as many wives and mothers as you can to donate baked goods, and the grocer to chip in for hot dogs for an easy old fashioned roast. You can sell tickets at the gate and several booths, and price food and entertainment alike on a scale based on the tickets. This makes it easy to sell the raffle tickets too! Door prizes are a great pull – even little prizes carry the kick of winning and make a dad feel grand.
At the end of the day, you can unveil the grand finale – let the children take the stage. They can each act out something they admire about their dad, and explain why they admire him. There won’t be a dry eye in the house! Then they can present their dads– topped off with a treat like a baseball cap supporting the local team.
